What it measures
Press every key on a ChromeOS keyboard and see which ones register. The tester uses a real Chromebook layout: Search instead of Caps Lock, and top-row action icons (Back, Refresh, brightness, volume) that report their browser codes.
What it reveals
Keys that never light up are dead or unseated. The top row is the interesting part: on ChromeOS the brightness and volume keys are often handled by the system before the browser sees them, so a 'dead' brightness key may be ChromeOS, not hardware. The tester separates real failures from system-managed keys.

How to test a Chromebook keyboard
- Press every key, one at a timeKeys light up while held and turn green once released. The board shows the ChromeOS layout: Search where Caps Lock sits, and top-row action icons (Back, Refresh, brightness, volume) instead of F1-F12.
- Watch the top-row iconsPressing Back, Reload, brightness or volume should light the matching icon with its real code (BrowserBack, BrightnessDown...). Some ChromeOS models handle brightness and volume in the system, so those may not reach the browser. That's ChromeOS, not your keyboard.
- Check the resultA key that never lights up is likely dead. Amber (stuck) usually means a press without release, or the window lost focus mid-press. Use the copy-summary button to save which keys failed for a repair report.

Why don't my brightness and volume keys light up?
ChromeOS handles those actions at the system level, before the browser sees a normal key event. Back, Reload and Full screen usually report their codes (BrowserBack, BrowserRefresh), but brightness and volume often don't reach the page. That's ChromeOS behavior, not a broken keyboard.
Why aren't my top-row keys working?
If Back, Refresh, Full screen or the brightness keys do nothing, check Settings → Device → Keyboard → Treat top-row keys as function keys. When that's on, the top row acts as F1-F12 instead of browser actions. Turn it off, or hold Search while pressing a top-row key to send F1-F10. On this tester, Back, Refresh and Full screen usually register their codes; brightness and volume are handled by ChromeOS and may not show up.
Where is Caps Lock on a Chromebook? Where is the Search key?
Chromebooks don't have a Caps Lock key. The Search key (the magnifier icon, where Caps Lock sits on other laptops) is the modifier: Search + 1 through 0 sends F1-F10. To get Caps Lock, press Alt + Search. On this tester the Search key is in the Caps Lock position and lights up when pressed.
My Chromebook keyboard test shows a dead key. Now what?
Try a hard refresh and test again to rule out a stuck page. If the key still never registers, try the same key in an incognito window. Still dead? It's likely hardware. Reseat a removable keycap, or check a repair guide for your model.
How do I know if it's a software problem?
Use this tester in a guest profile. If keys work there, your profile or an extension is the culprit. If keys fail everywhere, test an external USB keyboard. If that works too, the built-in keyboard needs service.
How do I reset a Chromebook keyboard that stopped working?
First restart and test in Guest mode. If the keyboard still fails, do a hardware reset: turn the Chromebook off, hold Refresh, tap Power, and release Refresh when it starts. Back up Downloads first, since a hardware reset can clear files there. If the keyboard still fails after that, it's likely hardware.
Can I test a Chromebook I'm about to buy used?
Yes, that's a great use of this page. Open it on the machine, press every key, and watch for any that don't light up. Also test the spacebar and modifiers, which get heavy use on school devices.
