What does a switch tester actually test?

Whether each key registers, and how many times. That's enough to catch dead keys, bad solder joints or a bent pin before assembly, but not force or travel.

Are the sounds real switch recordings?

No. They're short synthesized tones meant to hint at the character of each type. The real sound depends on the switch, the plate and the case.

Which switch type should I pick?

For gaming, linear is common because it's fast and even (e.g. Red switch). For typing, tactile gives feedback without noise (e.g. Brown switch). Clicky is crisp and audible (e.g. Blue switch); try a physical sampler before buying a full set.

My key registers twice on one press. What now?

That's chatter, usually switch contact wear or a very low debounce setting. Run the Chatter test to confirm, then clean the switch or raise debounce in firmware.

Can I test a keyboard I'm about to buy used?

Yes. Press every key and watch for any that don't register or count oddly. Mechanical boards are usually fixable, but the price should reflect the work.
